Social Media News Releases

Social Media New Release (SMNR) definition-  There are many definitions for a Social Media News Release, but the one that stood out the most was the definition on realwire.com. According to realwire.com, “A press release format designed for the online media world”. Although it is actually intended for the press, the format is also easily interpreted by “bloggers, publishers, journalists, and the public at large (realwire).”

Advantages for SMNR- It is quick and easy to read. It reaches mass public. Comments can be left on there. It is actually the easiest to be shared compared to any other news release and very easy to create a coversation. According to infoworld.com, “For companies that want to showcase a progressive, ‘forward thinking’ position, it might be a good idea for them to distribute a social media release. You know, “be the brand” and all…”

Disadvantages for SMNR- Some websites do not recognize the font used in SMNR so they can be pretty pricey to change the format. Not every market is ready for an SMNR. The releases are only useful online too.  According to infoworld.comm “There are more ‘new media’ points-of-contact like Skype and instant messaging (IM) on the SMR. More points of contact means more ways for people to reach out to the company about the release. This doesn’t necessarily mean more coverage, but one could argue that train of thought.”

A PR practitioner should use a SMNR when they are trying to reach to a larger crowd. It can easily be searched for online and anyone can see it. It is a lot better than just writing a regular press release for their company. It is also very quick to do when a practitioner can be in a hurry or a big event is coming up. They will also use it when they are posting on a blog.

How to create a SMNR:

The link to the SMNR that I created is http://www.prxbuilder.com/link.aspx?id=324ff33d-8ce3-4026-8574-6ecf76daf304&name=KappaDelta_marley_2011.xml&xform=xslt%2flink.xslt&perm=true … It’s main purpose is to attract an audience who is interested in helping out a good organization and preventing child abuse while eating wings and having fun. It’s target audience is mainly college students and statesboro locals who are willing to make a difference in a child’s life.

Tips for SMNR creations:

(using our PR book –  Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques, 6th edition)

1. Do not overdo it. It’s important to write colorfully and to include descriptions of people, places and events, but do not write poetry when you want press.

2. Place key terms in key positions like headlines or the first paragraphs.

3. Use short and catchy headlines or subheads to highlight main points and interest and catch the reader’s attention.

4. Look for creative ways to tie your announcement in to current news or trends. It is always good to stay current with the world today.

5. Make sure your announcement is clear for the editor’s readers. It is never a good thing to be all around the place and unclear for a reader.

Reflecting on the Semester (on a personal view)

This semester was a task for me with everything that I have been though. My dad died last semester at the end of October and I was out of school for a while then came back 2 weeks before finals. All the work I had to make up was piled up and I had to study for 4 finals on top of that. I was hoping all of my professors would understand, but two very selfish ones decided to fail me (I had a B in both of their classes before everything happened). Coming back to school in January was pretty easy at first, but I had my moments where I just wanted to break down and give up. Not many people understand how hard it is to lose a parent, especially one to such a sudden and unexpected death. As this semester progressed though, I noticed my grandmother was starting to go down in health. Around February she fell and broke her foot and her health dramatically took a downward fall. We had to end up putting her into a nursing home because my mom and aunt could not take care of her every minute of the day. On Monday we were told that her kidneys were shutting down and Dialysis would not help her. By Wednesday night she passed away. I am very glad I was able to spend the last 2 hours of her life with her though. She was surrounded by family and loved ones.

Needless to say, this has been such a traumatic year for me. School has actually been a lot easier this past semester though because I wasn’t taking the full load of a full time student so I actually had time to start working two different jobs and make some money. I just hope that everything will eventually fall into place again. I try to keep my head up wherever I go and stay positive.

The Bucket List

About a year ago I conjured up a bucket list that I seriously abide by. So far I have only done two things on it and it was actually the first and second thing I had written- Attend a Dave Matthews Band concert and to participate in Study Abroad (Costa Rica). Just those two things have been life changing and exciting events that have taken place in my life. Just doing the other things on my list will have a serious impact on my life and I really hope do accomplish every single one of them. The other things I have on my list are:

*Learn to surf

*Write a book

*Learn to play the guitar

*Go to New Zealand

*Catch a Sailfish/Marlin

*Go scuba diving in The Great Barrier Reef

*Take an RV across the country

*Hike the Appalachian Trail

*Live in Costa Rica for a year

*Shake hands with someone who has changed the lives of millions.

*Chase a tornado
